Why Purchase an Organic Mattress?
Most of us spend a third of our life snoozing, so choosing the right mattress for your bed is no small decision. It has to be comfortable and provide the right support for your body, as well as affordable – a purchase that doesn’t take the spring out of your bank account. But the choice that you make impacts not only your well-being. It also affects the health of the planet. There are many organic mattress options out there to suit any individual’s needs, and more importantly, all the resources used are natural and sustainable.

What Is Wrong With Traditional Mattresses?
Mattresses incorporate many different materials. Traditional mattresses usually contain springs or synthetic, man-made materials, which are then covered with layers of fabric. The cotton used to make the fabric portion of the bedding is typically grown with heavy use of pesticides. The fabric is then exposed to a barrage of chemicals and fire retardants; some even contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Production of all of these materials has a substantial, polluting and energy-guzzling impact on the environment. The chemicals used in production make the fabric weak, reducing the durability of your mattress. Many residual chemicals remain after the mattress makes it way into your home. That’s what the ‘new mattress’ smell is – chemicals. And exposure to these chemicals is not good for the health of your family.

What Makes an Organic Mattress So Special?
Organic mattresses are made without synthetic foams, artificial flame retardants, chemically-grown cotton; unnatural elements that you may not want to spend a third of you life pressed against in slumber’s repose. The fabric portion of organic mattresses is either certified organic cotton or a mix of organic cotton and organic wool (which is a natural flame retardant). And instead of synthetic foam materials providing the support, natural latex rubber it typically used for the mattresses inner core. All these items are sustainable, natural products that are much less harmful to the environment. Even better, the fabric of organic mattresses and eco-friendly bedding is not exposed to harmful chemicals. This makes the fabric gentler on your skin and less likely to aggravate allergies and other respiratory problems.

If you have purchased an organic mattress, let us know! Was it competitively priced? Do you like it as much or more than your previous non-organic mattress? Choices of Organic Bedroom and Household Products Increasing

There are more earth-friendly product choices now available than ever before. Organic bedding and clothing products have been around for years, but now more substantial bedroom items, such as organic mattresses, are making the scene. And there are already many organic mattress lines out there, providing healthy competition that makes this big ticket item more affordable. Not being composed of synthetics and exposed to harmful chemicals also makes organic mattresses stronger and longer-lasting. This means that your organic mattress can easily outlast your need for it, and you may be able recoup some of your cost in the growing market for second-hand organic products.
