More Tips for Organizing Your Eco-Friendly Organic Bedroom: Not Only Safe and Healthy, but Tranquil and Organized, As Well

You’ve already taken steps to create an eco-friendly organic bedroom that is safe and healthy by choosing a natural mattress, lush organic bedding, and low-VOC paint for the walls… but is the clutter that builds from a busy life distracting you from the peace and serenity that your bedroom should provide? By taking a few simple steps, you can turn your organic but slightly disorganized bedroom into a lovely refuge that is not only safe and healthy, but also an oasis of calm and serenity.
Distractions and worries have no place in your haven, so move anything that causes you worry (such as your chequebook, that pile of bills to be paid, and your to-do list) to another spot in your home. If your home office absolutely must be in your bedroom, shut it away in an armoire or tuck it under your bed in a pretty box. A television needn’t be a distraction, but if your viewing habits tend to be primarily news or financial stations, consider moving that TV out of your bedroom, too.
Keep your closets clean, green, and organized, too! Especially if you’re building an eco-friendly wardrobe, this is the perfect time to retire any worn non-organic garments that you’ve replaced with safer, planet-friendly organic clothing. Invite a friend with a great eye for colour and fit over, and tame your closet, following these tips:
• Arrange your closets in a fresh way that works for you! Whether you organize by outfit or by category, make sure you can easily see all of your clothing and accessories (my sister has arranged her closet to look like her favourite shop and loves to choose her outfits each day!). A tip: If you have trouble putting outfits together, research shows that arranging your clothes by item – all of your shirts together, all skirts together, etc. – will help you come up with and coordinate more outfits.
• Keep in mind that convenience and simplicity will help you stay organized, too! Keep the clothing you wear the most right at your fingertips, rather than having to constantly dig for your favourite organic bamboo shirt or organic cotton sweater. And, keep your closet clutter free by getting rid of clothes you truly don’t wear. A simple trick to help you track what you wear is to invest in two different types or colours of hangers. Then, as soon as you’ve worn a garment, change its hanger type. You’ll soon see the garments that you wear regularly.
• Once your closet is organized, keep it that way with the “one in, one out” rule. When you bring home a new organic sweater or pair of yoga pants, always retire a worn or unworn garment. In the back of my closet, I keep a container ready to go to the second-hand shop – once it’s filled with togs I no longer wear, I simply toss it into the car and drop it off while running errands. If a piece of clothing is still in good shape, you can even recoup some of your investment by selling it online or taking it to a consignment shop.
Once you’ve invested the time in arranging your eco-friendly bedroom, be mindful about making decisions that will help you to stay organized. For example, choose organic bed linens in coordinating basic solids. If your linen closet is filled with an assortment of eco-friendly sheets, shams, and duvet covers in two or three colours you love and an assortment of organic fabrics, you’ll never have to worry about matching sets or have to completely restock when one or two pieces wear out or are accidentally stained.
While we are often tempted to spend our “arranging” time on functional areas such as the bathroom cupboard, the children’s dressers, or the family room play area, no place in your home is more important to your physical and mental well being than your bedroom. An escape from the hustle and bustle of today’s hectic life, your bedroom should immediately bring a sense of calmness and peace, rather than be just another cluttered and distracting room in the home. Just a few minutes each day is all it takes to ensure that your eco-friendly bedroom will provide you with a wholesome, toxin-free, peaceful haven in the midst of a busy world.
